Nestled on the west coast of the state of Florida, the port town of St. Petersburg has a famous ship lodging in it's popular tourist attraction, the pier. The Bounty was used as far back as 1962 in the Marlon Brando film 'Mutiny on the Bounty' and recently appeared in the latter two-thirds of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy. There is also an aquarium and visitors can take sightseeing boat tours from the pier.
The city contains a part of the state university as well as the Poynter Institute, a specialist college that trains journalists and trains those wanting to teach journalism. An interesting fact about the college is that it owns the local paper, the St. Petersburg Times; an arrangement that was facilitated by Mr. Poynter who owned both establishments. Naturally for a port town, the major business of the area is fishing, a trade established by resident Henry Hibbs in 1899.
St. Petersburg was a popular retirement destination throughout the 1960's and 1970's, but since the 1980's the population has been increasing at a slowing rate. The town is represented, through the name of the encompassing region Tampa Bay, in the National Football League, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball.
Residing in the city of a humid climate and 133 square miles, of which 55% is covered by water, are 248,000 people, according to the 2000 census.
