In 1947 Bing Crosby rhymed north-Florida city Tallahassee with banks that are "green and grassy", and more than half a century later, in 2006, the city was awarded "Best in America" for parks and recreation by the National Recreation and Park Association.
As well as natural beauty, the city is home to a fine collection of galleries, museums and events, the highlight of which is the annual three-week-long winter festival that commences in mid-November and this year reaches a pinnacle on the first day of December. Recognized as one of the top 20 events in the south-eastern region of the United States, this is a celebration of art and entertainment.
Leon county, within which the city sits, is the highest educated county in Florida. Forty-nine percent of the population has either a bachelor's, master's, professional or doctorate degree. The major employers in the city include communications giant Talla-Comm and Danfoss Turbocor, who produce high-efficiency compressors.
In 1974 city planners recognized the probability of future growth and made the public aware of the size of development needed for the city. Residents played an integral part in coming up with six separate designs which incorporated government buildings, public space and retail outlets. Finally, the best parts of the six designs made up the final design.
At the time of the most recent census, Tallahassee city had a population of 159,000 spread over 98.2 square miles.
